First International Scientific Conference "Nanotechnology of Functional Materials"

From the 22nd to 24th of September the SPbSPU hosted the First International Scientific Conference "Nanotechnology of Functional Materials".

RudskoyOrganizators of the Conference – Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University and the St. Petersburg Academic University, Scientific and Educational Center of Nanotechnology of RAS. The Forum was held with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Committee on Science and Higher Education of the Government of St. Petersburg.



 The main objective of the Conference was to present and discuss the latest scientific results of basic research and practical achievements in the development of new functional metal and ceramic materials with high performance properties and their production technology.



The theme of the conference reflected the following areas of state and nanotechnology development of functional materials:

1. Physical and chemical properties of nanostructured state;

2. Amorphous, nanocrystalline and nanostructured metal materials;

3. Nanostructured powders, composites, ceramic materials and coatings;

4. Methods of investigation of nanostructured materials, modeling and information support for nanotechnology.


discussion before the opening of the ConferenceThe conference was attended by 325 representatives of more than 120 organizations of the Russian Federation, 20 organizations of RAS, 70 hight schools of Russia, Ukraine and other countries near and far abroad, 30 industrial organizations. The conference participants presented more than 300 reports, describing the current state of research and practical applications in nanotechnology of Functional Materials. There were heard 124 oral and discussed 172 poster reports on all topics of the conference.



The organizing committee of the conference noted the interest of scientific and industrial organizations to use nanotechnology to create functional materials. The number of universities, leading research and educational activities in the direction of nano-materials and technology increased: more than    twice over the past two years.



According to the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Vice-Rector for scientific work of the SPbSPU A.I. Rudskoy, the forum allowed scientists to get acquainted with the latest developments in nanotechnology of functional materials, exchange ideas, make recommendations for solving urgent problems in the discussed topics.



It has been decided to hold a conference every two years at the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University.

MaksimovAt the opening of the Conference the participants were welcomed by the Chairman of the committee on Science and Higher Education of the Government of St. Petersburg A.S. Maksimov, Chief scientific secretary of the Presidium of the St. Petersburg Scientific Center of RAS, E.A. Troppand the President of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Academician Yu.S. Vasiliev. The conference was chaired by the Vice-Rector for scientific work of the SPbSPU, RAS Corresponding Member A.I. Rudskoy.



President of the SPbSPU, RAS Academician Yu.S. VasilievThe plenary session of the first day of the conference was graced by the award ceremony of diploma and medal of Honorary Professor of the SPbSPU to Czech counterpart Henrik Dyje. The title of Honorary Professor of the Polytechnic University was awarded to   Prof. Henrik Dyje for his great contribution to the development of scientific research in the field of plastic processing of metals and nanostructured materials, design and implementation of new curricula.



In his report "Nanoscience, nanotechnology and nanoindustry – tendencies of development" the Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science of the Moscow State University, academician Y.D. Tretyakov said: " Nanorevolution is inevitable. In the future nanoproducts are able to provide a vast savings in energy and raw materials, comfortable environment for people, not to mention the fantastic opportunities associated with the development of nanomedicine and nanopharmacology, nanoelectronics and nanosensory".


RAS Academician Yu.D. TretiyakovOn the topic of return of investment in nanotechnology, the Academician compared the entire technological process with the producing of a new drug. "Nanotechnology – extremely knowledge-intensive and expensive industry, it is extremely difficult path from the idea to its implementation in production", – he said.



From the viewpoint of Yu.D. Tretyakov, in Russia today the research aimed at creating a revolutionary nanotechnology is not developing enough. One of the pressing problems in nanoindustry the Academician Tretyakov named staff shortages. According to him, the emergence of nanotechnology industry in Russia will need 120 – 140 thousands of professionals – from scientist to an operator at an industrial complex.



The Dean of the Faculty of Material Science, of the MSU raised also the topic of distance learning. According to him, in our country, given the popularity of the specialty "Information technology" in higher education, distance learning opportunities are still being used not enough, or it is quite ineffective. And, for example, in the University of Maryland (USA) due to the massive use of information technology, the number of students over the past 5 years increased from 60 to 360 thousand people.

President – the scientific advisor of FSUE CRI "Prometheus" Academician I.V. Gorynin presented to the participants of the conference the report, "Nanostructured materials – cutting-edge in developing of metallurgy".



Igor Vasilievich told about the methods of improving the strength of steel through the creation of nanostructures, nanostructure realization in an industrial environment, methods of developing of new types of steel for offshore structures and pipelines, as well as about the main areas of application of laser technologies in the industry.



A lot of attention in his speech, I.V. Gorynin gave to the prospects of development of structural metallic nanostructured materials. One of the main conclusions of the report – the need for creating "white metal metallurgy", as the traditional steel industry pollutes the environment. Also, according to Academician Gorynin, today there is an opportunity to use nanotechnology for the gradual replacement of the basic processes of traditional metallurgy.



The first day of the conference continued with poster presentations and work in sections.



Director of “Kurchatov Institute” M.V. KovalchukOn the 23rd of September at the plenary session the report "Convergence of Science and Technology – the base of the new technological order" was presented by the director of the Kurchatov Institute (Moscow), corresponding member RAS M.V. Kovalchuk.



In the hour and a half speech the Director of one of the most famous scientific centers in the country presented his view on the state of science in general, spoke about what the Kurchatov Institute was engaged presently and would do tomorrow and urged young scientists to never be afraid of their own "crazy" ideas: What if they would be scientific prediction?



"The main goal of science and technology in the postindustrial society is reproduction of the systems of live nature on the basis of previously established technologies" – such wording appeared on one of the slides of the report. According to Kovalchuk, today the main purpose of science is the penetration in the microworld, and the basic paradigm of development is the transition from analysis to synthesis. This can be achieved with the help of information technology and nanotechnology. Today, without the use of information technologies – the basic multisector technologies – the progress is impossible, because they combine all the existing technological diversity.

"In fact, the creation of nanotechnology has led to a change in the whole technological order... The problem of nanotechnological science in the short term – to reproduce the systems of live nature, creation of anthropomorphic hybrid technical systems, biorobotics systems", – said M.V. Kovalchuk.



Speaking about the state of the global energy system, Kovalchuk proposed two options of escape out of the global collapse of the resources: return to the primitive condition, becoming a part of nature, or – the creation and application of technologies aimed at energy conservation and efficiency. As an example, M.V. Kovalchuk named the use of LEDs instead of the wasteful and non-lasting "Ilich bulbs".



Concluding the report, which caused, without exaggeration, great interest of the audience, Michael Valentinovich. formulated his vision of science and technology at the present stage as a synergistic union of four directions: nano-, bio-, information and cognitive technologies.



On the same day under the chairmanship of M.V. Kovalchuk was helda round table on "Innovative problems in the field of nanotechnology".
