Air conditioning comes from the tropics, the magazine "Science and Life", 17.09.2010

St. Petersburg polythecnics, having carefully studied the experience of Her Majesty the Nature, created an original device of air purification.

hardware-biological installation to clean indoor airGuided by the Petersburg botanical garden, where, along with relic plants in our middle zone are assembled representatives of tropical flora of other continents, prompted the scientists of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University to refuse from the services of itching conditioners and tedious fluttering fan blades. In any case, such a conclusion can be made by visiting the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Ecology, headed by the University Rector, RAS Corresponding Member Mikhail Fedorov.

What can be seen in the reception of the rector, seems at first glance, something like a well-groomed minioranzherei. "This is a hardware-biological installation to clean indoor air – corrects Professor of the Department Konstantin Vorobyov. Natural air conditioner, if you like. In ancient times, when the atmosphere of our planet was constantly saturated with volcanic ash, plants, adjusting, learned to absorb and digest without damage to itself usually toxic to the human body traces of contaminants in the air. "

According to experts of the World Health Organization, the air in 30-70% of modern buildings in various countries around the world is quite dirty. It contains over 1000 chemical and biological agents, and over a quarter of the detected substances are allergens. In addition, indoor air contains a large number of organisms of different species.

Together with biologists, the authorsof the system carefully picked tropical plants (some of them have since long ago became commonplace in many homes and apartments), revealed the ability to absorb micro-organisms, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and, in fact, freshen and humidify the indoor air, saturating it with oxygen. And not just simply with oxigen: the air in the room with a "green wall" in its chemical composition and saturation of ions approaches theair of the mountain or forest. It is no secret that the keeping of many tropical plants indoors is very difficult. The authors regulated watering and lighting with a computer, and determined necessary dose of ultraviolet radiation. Now a special apparatus is monitoring the "climate". Here is the result: a "green wall" a half to two meters in size will effectively get rid of toxins in the air of fifteen meter room with a ceiling height of up to 2.5 m.

According to the conclusion of physicians, fragrant air conditioner with tropical plants provide working people a positive emotional attitude. Since the natural air-conditioning had not yet been put on the industrial stream (there are only a few copies), the plant for it have to be purchased. Therefore, the cost of health center until now is about 60 thousand rubles.

In 2009, a hardware-biological installation, created in the SPbPU, was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Innovation Fair in Nuremberg (Germany). The Committee on Environment and Ecology of St. Petersburg became interested in the development of polytechnics, and financed the prototypes and now looks for investors for the producing of the natural air conditioner.
