Energy-efficient House will be built on the SPbSPU campus

The first house with zero energy consumption will be built in St. Petersburg

The house design was developed by a student of the Polytechnical University. A house with zero energy consumption that will independently (without connection to central town mains) produce the required amount of energy will be built on the territory of SPbSPU. The first house in St. Petersburg with zero energy consumption is a common project of the Polytechnical University and the Finnish company SPU Oy specializing in energy efficient thermal insulating construction materials.

‘It’s not just the first such building in St. Petersburg, but, possibly, the first house with zero energy consumption in whole Russia,’ - claimed the chairman of SPU Management Board, Janne Yormalainen, one of the project proponents.

A house of a new type is distinct from other buildings, in that it annually produces more energy than it consumes. Thus, total level of its annual energy consumption is zero. The house will produce energy using only renewable energy sources: solar panels installed on its roof, soil heat pumps and small wind power generators placed near the building. Also low energy consumption will be ensured by mechanical ventilation systems, energy saving illuminating devices and heat-retaining windows and doors, designed using special technology.

Rooms of the designed building with zero energy consumption will accommodate the laboratory of energy efficient and innovative solutions in construction of the Polytechnical University. SPbSPU Dean, Doctor of Science Alexander Gorshkov emphasized that this building is to become some kind of a testing area for further analysis, monitoring, benefit evaluation of energy efficient engineering and design solutions used within the project.

In order to involve future Russian engineers from among students of the Polytechnical University, a competition for the best architectural design of the building was held. The winner was Klim Petrov. Ivan Sled took second place; the third prize was given to Oleg Orlov. Students Ivan Rys and Aidos Urustimov were also awarded as the competition laureates for unconventional, interesting and original architectural solutions. Winners and laureates were chosen by the council, comprised of representatives of SPbSPU and SPU Оy.

Construction of the energy efficient house is to be started in the next few months and to be finished by the end of 2012. Besides SPU Oy other Finnish and Russian companies specializing in energy efficient construction will participate in the project implementation.

Nikolay Ivanovich Vatin, the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of SPbSPU stressed the point that it is important not only to construct the house by efforts of well-known construction and engineering companies, but also to teach future Russian engineers to design such buildings.

It is planned to install devices and up-to-date information monitoring systems ensuring control of overall energy consumption level in zero energy consumption premises in order to prove efficiency of technologies used in the project. It should also be noted that the house will be built on the basis of experience of implementation of such technologies in climatic conditions of Finland which are similar to St. Petersburg conditions.
