The St.-Petersburg State Polytechnical University jointly with Committee for Economic Development, Industrial Policy and Trade of St.-Petersburg, Production Association "Polybusiness" supported by Committee for Science and Higher school of St.-Petersburg, the Commission on Education, Higher School and Science of Legislative Assembly of St.-Petersburg conducts in the period of 6-11, December 2010 the International theoretical and practical conference «THE XXXIX week of science and academic Research at SPbSPU»

 

 

    

 

 

The 39th Week of Science SPbSPU inter­national theoretical and practical con­ference and the 3-rd Innovations in Sci­ence, Education, and Business international polytechnic forum were held in the univer­sity from December 6, 2010, to December 11, 2010.

 

Every school and research institute at the university, members of research institutes of the Russian Academy of Science, Rus­sian and foreign universities, manufactur­ers, businessmen, and Conference registrationgovernment agen­cies took part in both the conference and the forum. There were more than 130 breakout groups. More than 1,500 papers were presented by students, and more than 180 papers by postgraduate stu­dents, 100 by entry-level researchers and 50 by distinguished scientists were ana­lyzed. According to the data by the Stu­dents Research Council, more than 5,000 participants took part in the conference.

 

Both the conference and the forum were paid for by Saint Petersburg government agencies such as the Committee for Sci­ence and Higher Education and the Com­mittee for Economic Development, Trade, and Industrial Policy (CEDTIP).

 

Opening Day and Plenary Session


Both the students, entry-level researches, postgraduates and employees from ev­ery of the 20 SPbSPU faculties and about 90 participants from Finland, Poland, Lat­via, Estonia, the Ukraine and Russian re­search institutes have taken part in the Opening Day and Forum held in the White Hall of the University.

 

More than 500 participants were at the Plenary Session. It was attended by dele­gations from 25 both Russian and foreign universities. The most important were from Lappeenranta University of Technol­ogy (Finland), the Latvian University of Agriculture, the ECOMEN Institute of Eco­nomics and Management (Tallinn), Lodz Polytechnic University (Poland), Kiev Polytechnic Institute (National Technical University of Ukraine), Moscow State Uni­versity, the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, Novosibirsk State Technical Uni­versity, Perm State Technical University, Northern (Arctic) State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, and many others.

 

Vice-Rector of SPbSPU A.I.RudskoyBoth the Commencement and Plena­ry meetings were presided over by A.I. Rudskoy, SPbSPU’s research vice-rec­tor and a corresponding member of Rus­sian Academy of Science. He congratulat­ed participants on the holiday of Science, which summed up their creative work and achievements during the whole year.

 

The speeches of welcome to the mem­bers of XXXIX Week of Science were de­livered by Yu.S. Vasilyev, the SPbSPU chief executive; K.A. Soloveychik, the deputy chairman of CEDTIP; G.B. Var­lamov, a professor, Dr.Tech.Sc, the vice-rector for research and teaching methods of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute; Kiassy Tuo­mo, a professor of Lappeenranta Univer­sity of Technology (Finland).

 

 

The results of the 2010 research contests were declared officially at the Plenary Session:

 

 

The following research contests took place during the year:

 

“Student of the Year for achieve­ments in scientific research”

“Young talents as the future of the Polytechnic University”

“The best chair for achievements in scientific research”

“The best faculty for achievements in scientific research”

 

The winners were given medals, certifi­cates and prizes. Competition winners also received congratulations at plenary faculty meetings.

 

The following awards were presented:K.A. Soloveitchik gives RAS-medal to postgraduate N.Osmanova

 

1.      Nadezhda Osmanova, a six-year stu­dent of the Faculty of Power Engineer­ing, was awarded the Russian Academy Medal, a certificate, and a laptop. V.M. Bo­rovkov was recognized posthumously as her supervisor. The student won the con­test for the best research paper, estab­lished by Russian Academy.

2.      Ivan Savelyev, a six-year student of the Faculty of Mechanical and Machinery En­gineering was awarded a certificate, a medal, and a laptop for the best student research of 2010; M.S. Bunduru, the Head of Flexible Automated Systems Academic Department, was also recognized as his supervisor.

3.      Grigory Melentyev was awarded a cer­tificate, a medal, and a laptop for the best graduate research of 2010; L.E. Vorobyov, a professor of the Semiconductors and Nanoelectronics Academic Department, was also recognized as his supervisor.

Tatyana Sergeyevna Koltsova (Faculty of Materials Science and Technology of SPbSPU, a school master, IS&SM, her research manager O.V. Tolochko, Dr.Tech.Sc., professor);

Natalya Aleksandrovna Fomina (Fac­ulty of Law, assistant lecturer, Theo­ry and History of State and Law Ac­ademic Department, supervised by V.N. Snetkov, Dr.Ped.Sc., professor, Theory and History of State and Law Academic Department).

 

For an Entry-Level Candidate of Science:

For Research in Humanities:

Vasiliy Romanovich Okorokov, profes­sor, Head of the International Manage­ment School (SPbSPU), was recog­nized

 

For Research in Technology-Applied Sci­ence:

Viktor Aleksandrovich Rassokhin, pro­fessor, Head of the Turbine Plants andEngines Academic Department, was recognized

 

For Research in the Natural Sciences:

Vladimir Anatolyevich Yerokhin, Head of the Advanced Studies Center Re­search Department, was recognized

 

Due to its research work during 2010, the Welding and Laser Technology Academic Department of SPbSPU was recognized as the best.

 

Accordingly, the Faculty of Materials Sci­ence and Technology of SPbSPU was recognized as the best Faculty. Gleb An­dreyevich Turichin was recognized both as the Head of the Welding and Laser Tech­nology Academic Department and as the Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology.

 

The Week of Science was continued on faculty’s sections and round tables


The breakout group covering Theoretical and Applied Research in Engineering and Technology-Applied Physics was held on December 7, 2010, for students, gradu­ates, and entry-level researchers. On the same day, the round table discussion on Technology-Applied Sciences was held as an integral part of the 15th Saint Pe­tersburg Entry-Level Researchers Confer­ence.

 

The students, graduates, researchers, and lecturers from major Saint Peters­burg higher schools and research insti­tutions working in the fields of engineer­ing and technology-applied physics took part in both the breakout group and the round table discussion. The main institu­tions that participated in the abovemen­tioned work are the following: SPbSPU, Saint Petersburg State University of Aero­space Instrumentation, Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University, Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics, and Optics, Iof­fe Physical-Technical Institute of the Rus­sian Academy of Sciences (Ioffe Institute), Saint Petersburg Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPbRC RAS), the D.F. Ustinov Voenmeh Baltic State Technical University, Saint Peters­burg Mining Institute, and Saint Peters­burg State Institute of Technology. Accord­ing to data from the founding agencies, most of the participants had been already honored as specialists and researchers by the Saint Petersburg government as well as at the 2010 young scientists com­petition.

 

Both the Breakout Group on Theoretical and Applied Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences and the round table discussion on Technology-Applied Scienc­es were held on the same day. The round table discussion was an integral part of the 15th Saint Petersburg Entry-Level Re­searchers Conference.

 

Twenty-three participants from seven schools of higher learning and research institutions in Saint Petersburg took part in the breakout group. The participants were mainly graduates, but students, research­ers, and lecturers were also. In addition, most of the participants had already been honored as specialists and researchers by the Saint Petersburg government the 2010 young scientists competition.

 

The joint session of the Entry-Level Re­searchers Council under the Saint Peters­burg government (ELRC SPb) and the Entry-Level Researchers Council under SPbSPU were held on December 9th, as part of the Week of Science.

 

The members of ELRC SPb from the D.F. Ustinov Voenmeh Baltic State Technical University, Saint Petersburg Mining In­stitute, Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics, and Optics, Saint Petersburg State Uni­versity of Industry and Industrial Vehicles, the Russian State Hydrometeorological University, OAO Izhora Plants, Saint Pe­tersburg State Technological University of Natural Polymers, the I.S. Gramberg Fed­eral Research Institute of Marine Miner­al Resources-Applied Geology, the Saint Petersburg State Veterinary Academy, the Petersburg State Transport University, and Northwestern State Correspondence Technology University participated in this joint session.

 

As the founding agencies report, this joint session was the first one for both ELRC SPb and the Entry-Level Researchers Council under SPbSPU.

 

Week of Science and Forum Covered by the Media

 

The PR promotion for the journalists of Radio Rossii (Radio of Russia), Informa­tion Telegraph Agency of Russia, and TV channels such as NTV-Saint Petersburg, Saint Petersburg, and 100 TV was estab­lished on December 6, 2010. The journal­ists visited the main building and the The­oretical Library of the university. Visiting the Expocenter, they saw the innovative inventions which had already been hon­ored at Expo 2010 Shanghai, China and iENA 2010, Nuremberg.

 

The journalists from the TV channel Saint Petersburg have also visited the Energy Efficient and Energy Conservation Tech­nologies Center, headed by S.M. Schisly­ayev. The projects and inventions by the center had been on display at the Interna­tional Innovative Projects Contest as Expo 2010 Shanghai, China.
