International Conference on Modern Metal Materials and Technologies in SPbSPU

On June 22-24, 2011, in SPbSPU, the 10th International Scientific Conference on the Modern metal materials and technologies.

International Conference on Modern Metal Materials and Technologies in SPbSPUNumerous representatives of scientific organizations within the Academy of Science, universities, research institutes and industrial enterprises from Russia,Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, Poland and other countries took part in it. The biannual conference that is traditionally held in SPbSPU involves participation practically from all the Russian regions, including Ural, Siberia and Far East.

According to the data of the organizational committee, the total number of participants amounted to 285 people, of  which 180 people presented scientific reports, and 42 – stand reports. The organizers note that over the latter 4 years saw an increase in young scientists of the age up to 35 y.o. actively participating in the conference (this year, over 55% of forum’s participants are young scientists.

Throughout the conference’s work the participants analyzed and discussed contemporary scientific and technical achievements in the sphere of a wide area of issues related to the theory and technological and engineering objectives in the metallurgy.

At the plenary session, summary reports were presented from leading industrial experts reflecting contemporary state of the issues related to the sphere of metallic materials and techniques, including associate prof. of RAS, M.I. Karpov (Solid-state Physics Institute of RAS, town of Chernogolovka), prof. V.Ya. Osadchy (Moscow State Academy of IT and Instrumentation Building), associate prof. of RAS, rector of SPbSTU, A.I. Rudskoy, associate prof. of RAS, M.I. Alymov (IMET RAS, Moscow), and other distinguished scientists.

rector of SPbSTU, A.I. RudskoyThe largest number of the sectional reports were dedicated to the traditional aspects of the conference – theory, modeling, technological processes of metal formation, and material science, and thermal treatment of metals (86 and 80 reports respectively).

Keen interest was shown towards the section of the Nanotechnologies in metallurgy, the discussions of the scientific reports dedicated to this sphere excited curiosity of the scientists dealing with related issues. The subject of  environment is getting more and more acute, including the use of power-saving techniques in metallurgy – the environmental problems have been of a particular interest to the scientists for a number of years.

The conference’s chairman, academician of RAS, I.V. Gorynin noted that among the presented reports one can  easily perceive an interdisciplinary nature of contemporary material science, including in itself both theoretical and  practical aspects.

International Conference on Modern Metal Materials and Technologies in SPbSPUAccording to prof. of SPbSPU V.V. Korablev, there is a tendency of all the more increased pertinence of the conference’s themes. In his view, this is related to rapid growth of new branches within the contemporary metallurgy and overall the material science, including nanotechnologies, the technique for production of new unctional materials and alloys possessing the form memory.

Despite the rapid growth of structural materials on the basis of polymers, ceramics and various carbon-related  structures, the metallic materials remain important. They are used in power engineering, transportation, aviation and space technologies, and shipbuilding. Nowadays, the metallic materials are increasingly extensively used in  medicine, mechatronics, superhigh-speed surface transportation, modern element base for renewable energy sources.

Conference’s organizers – the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Russian Academy of Science, Russian Fund of Fundamental Research, St. Petersburg Scientific Center of RAS, Academic Council of RAS for physics of condensed matters, Committee for Science and High School of the St. Petersburg Government, Interregional Union of Scientific and Engineering Public Organizations, St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University.
