Vasilyev (Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard, USA) has headed the "Medical technologies" laboratory, A.M. Pichugin (Institute Gustave-Roussy, France) has headed the "Synthetic biology" laboratory and D.I. Frishman (Technical Uniiversity of Munich, Germany) has headed the "Modeling of complex biological systems" laboratory. New laboratories are aimed at the development of implant devices, nanomaterials, laser technologies on a micro- and nanoscale levels, the ways of bioactive substances' living cells and medical agents delivery.

"Polytechnic University has vast experience in international collaboration with different educational institutions, certain scientists and professors. Nowadays the university attracts foreign scientists in order to implement joint research projects within the Program "5-100-2020" .Nevertheless, the partnership with the Association in such a way is a pilot project both for SPBSPU and RASA in Russia. The development of the partnership with our fellow scientists ( The agreement between SPBSPU and RASA was signed on February 18, 2014 Editor's note.) who work abroad, as well as their experience to launch scientific results into production in economically developed countries, is very valuable for us", - noted D.Y. Raichuk, SPBSPU Vice-rector for Research, during the opening of the Research and technology session with RASA representatives. "The "RASA-Polytech" project provides excellent opportunities for the development of partnership between Russian and foreign scientists in terms of a new relationship paradigm. Network interaction becomes the most efficient modern innovative technology that will allow scientists from different countries and institutes to communicate dynamically, share experience and achievements and as a result, it will help to tackle research problems more effectively. Surely, the Polytechnical University has a chance to become that ground for the network interaction setup between Russian-speaking scientists in Russia and abroad as well as for scaling such projects as RASA with other institutes", - summed up Dmitry Yurievich.

While presenting new researchers, D. Y. Raichuk, Vice-rector for Research, named important parts of the "RASA-Polytech" project. First of all, neither SPBSPU scientists nor RASA members imposed specific scientific problems on each other. The problems were selected allowing for the world's scientific tendencies, personal interests and scientific and technological potential of SPBSPU. Besides, according to D.Y. Raichuk, the laboratories and research teams will not work solely: they are supposed to interact closely not only with each other and with SBPSPU laboratories, but with researchers from other Universities.

Several industrial and scientific unions have paid close attention to the research of all six laboratories. We have come to the agreements with industries on cooperative actions and now we are making several grant proposals. "Biomedical field, as an obligatory demand of our time, will prevail in all departments of "RASA-Polytech" center. "RASA-Polytech" center will become an important member of the global integrated network of research structures by developing biomedical field as well as all existing scientific fields in the university and by creating joint projects and programs with other universities. Such a project will allow creating favorable conditions for the implementation of our research opportunities and demonstrate our significant potential to our fellow scientists abroad. Also, it will give them an opportunity to evaluate our technical infrastructure and prospects of world-class research in our university", - noted M.A. Odnoblyudov, the director of United Scientific Research Institute (USRI), at the meeting with RASA representatives.

According to Vyacheslav Ivanovich Safarov, professor of Paris Polytechnical School and one of the leading scientists of RASA, the suggestion to establish a research center in SPBSPU was considered after him and other RASA members had acknowledged the opportunities that SPBSPU has. "We found out that the Polytechnical University has great potential", - said the scientist. - It was very pleasant to meet a lot of young and ambitious students in the Polytech who are ready to support our ideas and work alongside with us right now./ That is the most inspiring thing!"

Andrei Mikhailovich Pichugin, the leading expert in molecular & cellular biology in the most significant European oncological institute - Institute Gustave-Roussy,agreed with his colleague. He has recently delivered a lecture in SPBPU on synthetic biology - a new scientific field that combines biology with engineering aimed at the creation of new (nonexistent) biological functions and systems. According to Pichugin, the interest of our students in new and prospective biotechnologies encourages optimism and confidence in his future laboratory's performance within SPBPU.

"Polytech is and ideal ground for a laboratory that is going to develop the complex next generation tool box for surgeons, especially for those who operate on a beating heart. It is essential to use such scientific fields as robotics, IT and IT systems, material engineering in order to develop that tool box, and Polytech can provide all what is needed. All that operates and develops", - said Nikolay Vladimirovich Vasilyev, the scientist from Harvard.

Sergey Nikolaevich Mikhaylov, professor of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland, graduated from SPBSPU long time ago and now he will be working under the formation of functional coating (can be used in different fields, for example, in medicine for bio compatible implants' coating - Editor's note.). He admitted that he was glad to return there and he was confident that positive feeling would help him in his work. Also, he was inspired by the improvements made in SPBSPU since his graduation. "SPBSPU has everything needed for exciting and productive work. My university has great potential", - said Mikhaylov.

RASA (International Association of Russian-speaking Scientists, who work abroad) was established during the First international seminar that took place from 5th to 11th October, 2008. The Association provides membership not only for scientists, but also for engineers, entrepreneurs who work in high-tech companies as well as students, post-graduate students and young PhDs who are on probation abroad. The Association is aimed at helping for career development. Association's main purposes: building up a worldwide network of Russian-speaking scientists who work abroad; sharing knowledge and experience; cooperative projects and coordination of research programs.

RASA has two departments: European in France and North-American in the USA. The third department (Asia-Pacific) is currently forming.
