Interfaculty Research Laboratory of physics of the improved plasma confinement of tokamak (LPIPCT) was founded in SPbSPU to implement the resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation № 220, accomplishment of works according to the contract № 11.G34.31.0041, arranged between the State Educational Institution of higher education "SPbSPU", Ministry of education and science and leading scientist Friedrich Wagner, honorable president of Institute of Plasma Physics, Max Planck Society, Germany.

 

Area of the research: high-temperature plasma physics

 

The purpose of the project: the study of physics of improved plasma confinement of tokamak.

 

The main objectives are: to organize a scientific laboratory at the University for experimental and theoretical studies of the regimes with improved plasma confinement, equip the laboratory with the instrumentation for such researches, actively involve undergraduate and postgraduate students of the university.

Planned research results: To study the most perspective regimes of tokamaks, which are considered as main regimes for future tokamak thermonuclear reactor. Laboratory plans to focus on the study of regime with high confinement (H-mode), improved regime (I-mode) and regime with internal transport barriers, along with improved regimes, typical for spherical tokamaks. Wave-number spectrum of drift-wave turbulence and frequency, excited by the instabilities of various types, the role of the electric field in the suppression of turbulence and the formation of transport barriers, nonlinear interaction of turbulent fluctuations with different wave numbers and frequencies will be studied. Edge-localized modes (ELM) regime with high confinement (H-mode), and the possibility of achieving regime without edge-localized modes will be analyzed.

 

In this connection, the possibility of reduction of the heat load on the surface of the materials of the first wall and divertor will be explored.
